The best laid plans of Kittys and Choppaz often go awry. At least that’s what I’ve been telling myself the whole first half of this year. Towards the tail end of 2010, I approached Kreayshawn (who‘s real name is Natassia,) who was still fairly unknown, although her popularity was steadily rising. I wanted to do an entire mixtape with her and hopefully V-Na$ty once she got out of Santa Rita Jail. My concept was pretty simple, take a whole bunch of classic Memphis tracks, murk them up a bit, and then have the two girls based freestyle over them. Kreayshawn wholeheartedly agreed, and asked if she could pull in some of her friends to help out. Before long it seemed like this little tape was going to become a virtual who’s who of underground superstars.

It's been 10 years since Robert Earl Davis Jr., pka DJ Screw, left this planet.His legacy is still with us though, a living, driving force so what did this man do that was important?Without a doubt it is far more than the obvious fact that he pitched his music down to syrup sweet tempos.Hardcore turnatablists have been quick to point out his shortcomings.His cuts were often sloppy, his chops just a tad off beat, his transitions abrupt and jarring at times.Still, anyone who has ever experienced the magic of a gray cassette knows exactly what that proverbial damn deal is. No other mixtape DJ has ever conveyed such a feeling of passion. Screw's personality and passion filled every minute of his tapes.Just ask the hundreds of people that used to line up outside his apartment to get their hands on every mix he made.
Those tapes were later dubbed and sold in every flea market on the third coast.Listeners disregarded the questionable quality of 4th and 5th generation dubs, instead concentrating on the information carried within the little plastic shell.Screw's tapes were equal parts mixtape and town hall meeting.Fans on the Southside were treated to freestyles delivered by the mechanic on the corner, the guy next door who walked home from his crappy sales job; only to spend the entire night in the Lab for the chance to grab the mic for five minutes.The community spirit seeps through Screw's mixes... the majority of which were recorded during these all night sessions.People come and go, their arrivals announced, their departues noted.Some dying to flex their lyrical muscles, others just dropping by to wish a loved one a happy birthday.Robert E. On a personal level, Screw's technique and music has touched me more than most.Like many, I was first exposed to it in the later 90's, during the Napster revolution.Although immediately attracted to the more polished sound of Swishahouse and Beltway 8, Screw's mixes started to dominate my ears. My first copies of "Southside Still Holding" and "Dancing Candy" were barely listenable, but listen I did.The slow pitch immediately sounded organic to me, and I quickly forgot that the music was even slowed.Unlike Swishahouse and later DJs - Screw's mixage does not concentrate on the chop.Instead, he lets the music speak for itself... only adding chops and scratches to accentuate what is being said.If he liked a line, he'd bring it back a few times... if he like a drum sound he'd chop it up. Rather than concentrate on perfect execution, Screw seemed to care more about how the music felt - as if he was looking at the big picture, rather than the minute details.The result is like an amazing Polaroid picture... blurry, yet beautiful.
For this mix, I honestly attempted to recreate a real Screw mix.If you want to hear pristine versions of these songs, they are available to you.Instead, I tried hard as hell to create a "live" mix that captures at least some of Mr. Davis' essence. To do this, I found it necessary to muck it up a bit... but hopefully in a good way.

Awhile back I got a great tape of grungey punk rock by Londons Bitches on Deathbomb Arc, they may have a few left here.
So I was kinda pleased to see they have put out a self released 7". The tape was rough around the edges and full of energy. The songs on the 7 take things up a notch. They are still grungey and in yr face, but the better recordings, bring clarity and more punch. Without neutering Bitches sound. Go and pick this up, we're playing to it death. Blackeye.

These little mini zines are done by all round dude/artist/skater/illistrator James Hall. They are like little art booklets as much as zines to our eyes. Well worth a look. We picked up the Blackeye music zine, a zine about DIY tattooing, and a nice art zine by Ashleigh Eades, well worth a look.

Hoaxine.

We highly recommend this zine. Great interviews with Plug, the Mad Headed Octagon (also a Pheromoan), Foot Village, Design A Wave, bits on Patty Hirst, The Dune film Jodorowsky never made. I wasn't sure what to make of this zine, great cover and some nice content. But it did seem to be mostly about other zines. But they do run a zine distro. It did come with a cdr with a lot of songs from Roseanne Barr (who I think make this zine), Chaps, Corey Orbison, and Universal Orders, all great bands. But the cdr we got was fucked by royal mail. Worth it for the cdr and a look I think, so long as the postman doesn't fuck it up on the way. Its only 80p heres their myspazz.

Maximum Rock N Roll

Bit of a surprise for us here but we have started reading MRR again. I remember years ago getting it when I listened to a lot of hardcore and patch bands. But lately they have spread their definitions of punk abit and all for the good. Go and grab a copy and check it. Nice to see MRR relevant again.

Black Mamba Beat / Al Qaeda split tape

We just got our first releases of 2010 in. First up is an awesome pairing of London's (via South Africa) Black Mamba Beat and San Francisco's Al Qaeda (the band not the terrorist organisation).

Al Qaeda hit us with a 10 min noise/drone/psych jam 'Backdoor Rust'. I recently saw Dave Miller one of the Foxy Digitalis writers call them best new artist of 2009. Comparing these guys to psych masters Robedoor. All we know is 'Backdoor Rust' slays.

Black Mamba Beat featuring members of (Work That Skirt, Black Time and Wake Up Dead) hit us with 5 tracks of righteous garage/noise rock/ punk skonk.

You live, sometimes life sucks, sometimes its awesome, some of the time you just are, then you die.
One thing we noticed over the last year, is alot of talented people have taken that final bow and are gone for good. All of the following have left great legacies and bodies of work that people will dig hopefully for many moons to come. RIP Jay Reatard, Jack Rose, Rowland S Howard, Farrah Fawcett, David Carradine, Vic Chesnutt, Sky Saxon, Ron Asheton, and Lux Interior, and thanks for all the rad shit. If there's a lesson in death, live life. Fuck it. One day we're all gonna be gone.

Roll on Spring and the new shit

So its almost the end of January now and here we're getting to unleash our latest batch of new releases. But before getting into them, we figured we'd be fashionably late and talk about our favorite re-issues that came out in 2009.

It was great to see Beck's K rec's lp get a expanded (2 sides of 'offically' un-released trax) re-issue on double vinyl. Well worth picking up, no faux funk, no beats just great lyrics and Beck with a guitar and various K guys backing.
Sic Alps, double anthology on Drag City was greatly appreciated here. Collecting a bunch of 7's and tapes from the last few years. The plain white cover is shit though, I mean make an effort huh. Guess putting this out kinda makes up for all those Bonnie Prince Billy records in a small way though.
The Anals- Total Anal is a great collection of their 7"s (which we missed out on) and a few new songs. These guys are awesome and everyone should grab a copy of this. One of the best bands in France right now. Out on the pretty rad Permanent Recs.
Boredoms came with another part of their Super Roots series, and although its basically just one new track and some remixes, its nice to see some Boredoms on vinyl. If anyone has thier early lp's they wanna trade or whatever hit us up.
Art Fag Records did the right thing and collected a bunch of totally awesome Ye Olde Maids stuff and pressed them to a nice slab of vinyl. Hats off to them.
The Raincoats debut lp got a welcome re-issue too, if you haven't got this, remedy that as soon as possible. Still miles ahead.
Another welcome release was Weedeaters- God Luck and Good Speed. We all know CD's suck ass, so why wait years to get something out on vinyl? Well better late than never I guess. It was out on Southern Lord and surprisingly affordable, I mean lets face it they can take the piss with the price off their vinyl. How much is the new Sunn0)))??? A fucking lot.

Good Times, Bad Times, Part 2

The records that we really dug from 2009. There was alot of good music out the last year. We found it hard to wittle it down so we just put all out faves together in one big lump right here.

Heavy Winged- Waking, Shaking. (Aurora Borealis) Long assed stoned jams for days. Or most of the year in this case.
Pre- Hope Freaks (Skin Graft) One hopes that one day all modern hardcore/noise bands will sound this good.
Thee Oh Sees- Dog Poison (Captured tracks) Thees put out so many fvcking records. How come they are all so good? This one stood out abit above the others.
Pocahaunted- Passage (Troubleman) These girls just ruled 2008 and the beginning of 2009. Full stop.

Sylvester Anfang II - (Aurora Borealis) Psychy, black metal/doom masterpiece. Wanna get high with these guys.
Lightning Bolt - Earthly Delights (Load) A return to form by everyones fave psychadelic gnome rhythm section. 'Colossus' is worth it alone.

Magick Markers - Barf Quarry (Drag City) The Markers steer away from the total noise jam freak outs, and settle into to some awesome songs. And all the better for it.
Pens - Hey Friend! What You Doing? (DeStjil) These girls lived up to our expectations and dropped a spazzed out lo fi punk barnstormer. Put it on jump around and destroy.
SexVid - Communal Living (Dom America) The singles were awesome. But when they actually made a whole coherant lp of brutal hardcore, that acknowledged the past, but brought something new to the table. These dudes truely knocked some socks off. I did get some funny looks walking around singing to 'Footsteps' on an mp3 mix I did on headphones totally oblivious. Especially when I was behind some peeps "Footsteps getting closer...right behind you". Not as embaressing as when I sang 'Rape Me' by Nirvana on the bus though. I digress.
Topaz Rags- Capricorn Born Again (Not Not Fun) Britt from Robedoor and Amanda from Pocahaunted get together for this stoned session. Can't fault it a perfect collab.
Thee Oh sees - Thee hounds Of Foggy Notion (Castle Face) Dwyer and co play live (more in their folky phase than garage benders) sans stages on the beach, in the woods, Dwyers front room. The results are pretty breath taking. LP and DVD. Truely awesome project.
Heavy Winged and Inca ore- Ring Mining (Not Not Fun) Heavily Winged wow'd us with some great releases this year, they knock em out pretty quick. Waking, Shaking was amazing. But with their jam tendancies tempered by Inca Ores noise and electronics they end up in a different and truely inspiring place.

Good Times, Bad Times Part 1

So 2009 is dead and gone. Personally I couldn't care less, it is of no consequence to me what day it is, nevermind what year.
Anyway decided to do a few posts of the best stuff we heard this year for the hell of it anyway. Or rather the stuff we got a hold of and are still playing. I'm positive these are from 2009 as most of them actually have 2009 on the back. So here's 10 x 7's we particularly dug and continue to. There were actually lots of great 7's out this year but these 10 are still in a pile by the decks, nuff said.

Pink Reason- 'Winona' (Woodsist) and 'Borrowed Time' (Fifth Column/Stained Circles) AUS tour 7. I dig pretty much everything this dude does. And these didn't let us down, fucked laconic punk stripped down and raw as hell. The live AUS tour 7 has 2 great slow and screwed covers of 2 of our fave hardcore classics, Fear's 'Livin In The City' and Agent Orange's 'Bloodstains' as well as 'Borrowed Time'. Perfect.

Black Lips - 'Drugs' (Vice). A perfect slice of rock n roll goofiness. B side isn't all that tho, with Lumina's cover of the Lips of 'I'll be with you'. But the A side makes up for it, saves turning the fucker over too I guess.

Spectrals- "Leave Me Be' (Captured tracks). 2 great hits of Spectrals, motown inflected poppy surf punk. Can't wait for this dudes lp. Real Northern Soul here.

Deep Sht- 'Weird You' (NPIP) basically most of the same titled tape that came out on Family Time aways back. 'Hector' slays and its great to have these tracks on the black stuff. Nice of NPIP in get this out over here. Get the tape for the extra tracks tho. Carlos Ruiz's cover art on both are top notch as always too.

Graffiti Island- 'Headhunters' (House Anxiety) and 'Comitose' (Fin Du Monde). Graf island really did it for us this year. 'Headhunters' just slays especially 'Bad potion' on the B-Side. As do the trax on the one sided 7 on Fin Du Monde. One side of which comes covered in fake snake skin. Dirk the label owner told me he did all those by hand with a big roll of vinyl snakeskin. Now thats dedication. Go bro.

Vibes - 'Psychic' (Not Not Fun) One of the Pocahaunted lasses getting all distorted funky on our asses. Our asses dug it.

The Pheromoans- 'Revamper' (Convulsive). Awesome debut 7 by the Moans. 'Penis Envy 96' ruled and still rules on repeat here.

'Violent and Obscene' - A Tribute to GG Allin. (Italian Beach Babes) Fair Ohs, Pens, Male Bonding and Graffiti Island covering some of the most awesome songs in GG's canon. And actually pulling it off. Short blasts of scumfuck genius.

3x10 and the Blast Radius

Been thinking about a end of year list of records and tracks that we have been really digging and have inspired us. Not had the time to complete it yet, but heres 3 10"s that have caught our ears from 2009 for now. We have also got a mix together of some of our favorite tracks from this year. We'll post that up soon.

Flight

This is a great mix of glam/punk/fuzz. It all comes from one dude in Mississippi. And dude can make a righteous psychedelic punk noise for sure. All very grimy and lo-fi but rocking like a mofo. Stand out track on this for us was 'Unpredictable', which features in our end of year mix, but its all good. Came out on Kill Shaman Records. Still available if you want one.

Nerve City

Jason Boyer bowled us over with his 'Hell' tape. He hit us up with this at the same time. And its just as good as the tape, if not better. Twangs of psychy rockabilly punk from the other side. There is a definate feel of something 'other' here. And we like it, alot. Its out on Kill Shaman Records too. Those guys done good.

Tough Troubles / Chris Mainwaring Is Dead

Got this recently its just out this month. But we wanted to include it here, as its a real knock out.
Chris Mainwaring is dead side is good old hardcore punk from Duncraig in Oz, hits in all the right places. Chris Mainwaring being an Australian rules football player who died taking Ecstacy. Tough Troubles is kinda psychy doom, but coming from a hardcore place. Its one long (almost 8 mins) heavy jam and is a tale of partisans chased through the frozen forests of Bosnia by the Hun, c1943. Whatever we dig it. Get it for £5 at Geneva Lake recs.

Quite enjoyed this batch of lo fi grungy punk blasts from Bloody Knees. This is tape is really lo fi, vox are way down in the mix. But the energy of the trio pulls them thru and theres some definately nice songs beneath the distorto noise when you actually listen. These dudes do the MILK nite, who have put on some righteous bands, and a DIY label down in London. But the band may sadly be no more? You can still get the tape regardless for £4 here.

What I really liked about this, is that it came out after the summer haha. Works in the cold assed weather we've been having here lately tho anyways. But it does make me wistful for sun and surf. Oh well not long, I guess.

Spectrals

I really dug this 4 track tape. Reminded me alot of Sic Alps but british. Big Phil Specter wall of sound fuzz, and heavy motown drums. Was out on Suplex tapes. First run sold out sharpish but I think theres a pre order for a lil repress still available. Check here £4.50 if it is. Spectrals 7" on captured tracks rules too. Lots to come from this Leeds kid. All worth checking no doubt.

Male Bonding/ Fair Ohs

This is a live tape. Straight from the desk and onto tape. Been digging what Male Bonding do for awhile now, they rage thru a set on their side. Fair Ohs side is a nice ride too. really dug their tape on Suplex tapes awhile back. Even like the afrobeat stylings of their latest songs. Tho I must say I think Paul Simon is a twat. The live tape came out on Italian Beach Babes. Sold out now. But you can get it at a few distros I think. Check out the Italian Beach Babes shop tho. They have started distributing some great american labels and if yr in the uk you can save yrself a few nuggets.

Teen Sheikhs

A compilation of the Teen Sheikhs first 4 months recorded output. Tapeworm is the jam on here for me. But its all good. Sold out from Suplex tapes but i think they have a pre order deal on it for another small run as with the Spectrals tape. Go get it if its still there again £4.50 if it is. If you dig The Pheromoans, Wavves et al and falling apart post punk steez. You can't go wrong with this.

Repetition, Repetition, Repetition.

Been thinking of getting one of those end of year best ofs together. But we've been so busy we'll prolly wait till the year actually ends to do it. Besides been listening to really early records by the Fall and some old dub records I picked up at Really Good Records and not much new stuff this week. What year is it anyway?

Finished mastering the Jailhouse Fuck 12" we're putting out with Lazy Roar Records outta LA in the new year. Its all sounding nice, loud and rad as fvckery. Big thanks to jay at deepbluesound studios in plymouth for helping us out with that. Heard a couple of trax off Jays upcoming lp too. Not sure what name he's putting out under yet, or on what label, but its some dope tings. Next level beats, and the whole lp is based on a old school mixtape. Kinda a personal project and can't wait to hear all of it as its meant to be. Talked tapes and vinyl, will update peeps on that when we know more.

Sealings have a new tape/cdr combo out on the wonderful FLA records. Its a split with Louis Magic. So go get that, its all off the hook. Some great tings coming out on FLA all worth a look and listen. We're doing a split release with FLA of the scrumptious Lashes in the new year, can't wait for that. Its gonna be a fuzzy wuzzy bliss out.

So haven't been able to update this in a lil while. Rumours we have just been lunching out and living a life of debauchery are completely and utterly only half true. Truth is we've just been busy. Our vinyl comp is now out and available at our big cartel, Rough Trade and Norman Records in the uk and all ship international, Royal Headache have a few in AUS too. Which is pretty rad so go get that.

I had to write about these two self released 'demos' we got recently too.
Chapter Sweetheart are pretty rad. We have had 2 cdr's from these peeps and these both are great. They remind me a bit of the old dischord roster when it got more interesting than just 4 to floor hardcore, as much as I love that. Hints of the Make Up, Nation Of Ulysses, but definitely have their own sound. Check em out. You can get this and their latest cdr direct from the band themselves.

We also got this beauty from Ice Cream outta Florida. Their 'Pussy Rot' EP is a lo-fi slighty woozy, acid dazed masterpiece. Really digging it here. Theres a bunch of good tunes with a slighty creepy 'family' vibe. You can get it from the band via their myspace. I'd do that.

WWHRD?

Well issue 3 of WWHRD? is here. And again just like the last two its a great read. Who's the hardcore legend in this issue you ask? Reagan Youth step up this time. Interviewed on their tour here a couple of months ago. Saw one of the shows and they kicked out the jams for sure. Obviously with their original singer Dave Insurgent dead, they have a new one. But he held up pretty well. RIP Dave. Theres also a bunch of reviews,interviews with, Coke Bust, Ceremony, William English, Cold Ones, and a great lengthy interview with Fucked Up. Keep knocking them out Jack. Get it here. Comes with a nice green cover too.

Crucial Zine.

Got a copy of Crucial zine too. This comes with a nice orange cover and a drawing of the Thing! Lots of humour in this one. But some reviews and band interviews too, get it from the guys themselves or various distros, skate shops. Not as thick and hefty as WWHRD? But definatley worth a read and the humour will put a smile on yr face.

Beat Motel.

This a quite long running zine. Issue 9 now. Beat Motel is a great read. I got these two a few weeks ago and theres still little bits I've missed. Tons of reviews, gig reviews. Rants, humourous pieces, politics, a few interviews. Its almost too dense for me review. Do yrself a favour and pick this up. You won't be disappointed. Guy who puts this out also runs a zine distro, crammed with zines. I mean loads of the things. So head over to Corndog and get some DIY reading.

Clipper Guts.

Theres a couple of new Clipper Guts out too. One is a special on Lupen Crook and the Murderbirds, the other looks at the Loung on the Fram festival and has some interviews and Joes normal rants and humour, he's also put a CDR comp together. Deffo worth picking up.

This a great tape by Nerve City, still available I think from Amateur Depression. Who are putting out some great tapes right now by some awesome bands including Dead Meat who we hope to do a lil thang with in the new year. Nerve City make me think of the rockabilly punk band that Lux Interior is listening to right now, and seeping through some ectoplasmic crack to us. Its that good, reverb drenched twangs from the other side for reals. Dude hooked us up with an awesome 10" which we need to review here soon.

Improperlly Applied Force EP
Some nice drones and kinda NNF psych moves on this guys tape. We dig. Out on rad lil tape label Dream Root Recordings out of Ohio USA. Do yr chakras a fucking favor and pick this up.

Eva Braun
This is some next level, punk riot grrrl shit outta Holland. Really enjoyed this one. Everything kicks in the right place, and no wasted noodle doodles. On a nice pink tape from knife slits water. Who not content with calling themselves after a great A Certain Ratio song, put on awesome shows in Amsterdam at le club suburbia. They also have limited quantities of our tapes. RAD dudes indeed.

Pink Priest, and the Evil Format

So got a whole bunch of stuff awhile back from Pink Priest. Dudes stuff has been blogged around alot last few months and pitchforked, all of that. And deservedly so. This is great stuff. Built on a bed of noise, but filled out with melodic synth lines and drones. I like the way this guy sculpts something at times beautiful from the noise, drones and hums. But I'm not going to belabour the point, click on his name up there and listen for yourself. Its the best way. These came out on a whole bunch of labels. Kim Dawn, alberts basement, Digitalis Industries, Dial Square, and La Station Radar. All worth hunting down. What really interested me was the 3" cd's on La Station Radar and Kimberly Dawn. Not just because of the music, but I actually found myself liking the format. Alot of care has gone into the art and packaging, and maybe because of the size I don't know. Normally I'm not digging the format. But I will pick up a cdr or cd a band have done themselves or if the songs work well on a cd, heres a few I got recently and have actually made the best of the cd format. Lets see whats happening on the evil format.

Manuscripts.
I picked up this after hearing their homemade tape. Definitely one of the best UK hardcore bands around atm. Incredibly heavy, but also managing to sound fast and raging at the same time. Up there with Bastions. Waiting on their split 7". £4 from Power negi.

SW Hardcore comp.
This is a nice lil cdr comp of current hardcore bands from around the southwest of England. £3.50 from Tapeworm records, who also have a nice distro and zine. Featuring, Kasa, Rat Attack, Into The Dust, Kerouac, a whole bunch of stuff, 17 trax, 10 bands. Can't fault it.

Enslaved By Owls.
10 tracks and 37 minutes of music, limited to 50 copies. I picked up this after hearing Bad Life, who we are putting a split tape out with in the near future. Bad Life having ties with this guy. And its great stuff. Reminding me of ambient black metal, mixed with Goblin and all those old horror soundtrax you'd find on old Argentino flicks et al. $10 from here.

Blood Crips.
This is is a great bunch of songs from Leeds band Blood Crips. Featuring members of Broken Arm, and other Leeds hardcore bands. Rocks from start to finish and only £2 from the band themselves. Recommended.

Shields Mystical.
This is another great bunch of Leeds hardcore. Vixens on this is just immense. The guys in these two Leeds bands also do a great zine called Niche Homo. Been around awhile but you can still score a few copies from sea records £4. Do it.

No Paws(No Lions)
don't be afraid of where you live
OK this has been out forever. But its definitely great. Still available from the lovely guys at the great label and nudist colony Family Time in california. I think its great that these guys have like 10 bands and 5 members between them and they are all good and different. But yeh if you're gonna do a cd or cdr get these and learn.

Dog City EP
This is great old school inspired hardcore. Though inspired by the old school theres a dose of originality and a modern sound to this. Great riffs, mosh parts and even some gang vokills, the lyrics mix black humour with some wry observations. Can't fault it. £4 from their big cartel.

Internet Forever.
Ths is a collection of old songs, covers and live performances by Internet Forver. Its all pretty rad too. The covers are great, Beat happening, Why? and Dire straits. Live stuff sounds good too. Wait Dire Straits? Yep fucking dire straits. Around £3 from here unless its only available at shows now.

So been getting into buying zines again. And its been a rewarding experiance. Apart from Loud & Quiet outta London I have not been feeling the music press at all and thats free. Ok theres Wax Poetics and Yeti but they are more like books, and came from zines anyway. Heres a few zines we have found to be top notch recently.

Mongreal Zine.

This is a great garage/punk rock zine outta Canada. We really enjoyed reading these. And man they are thick and heavy and full of stuff. A great interview with our man CMR who has been doing some of the best underground covers, flyers and tees for awhile now, dude even hooked us up with our logo (wheres my tees dood?) . A great and funny interview with King Khan, tons of reviews. A hilarious interview with Nardwar and a moving for me reprint of an old interview with recently passed Lux Interior of the Cramps. Stay real on the otherside bro, you too Sky Saxon whos in here also. Loads of pix and stuff and if thats not enough every issue comes with a fucking awesome cdr full of way to many bands to list here.

WWHRD?

When you call yr zine What Would Henry Rollins Do? you have to be down with hardcore. And these guys are definately down with hardcore. And so are we, so we love this one. Writer Jack also sings with a great old school hardcore inspired band called Dorian Gay. But yeh the zine, again alot of emphaisis on music. Interesting and well written interviews with Throats, Doomriders, SSS, Maths, the awesome Manuscripts, Cloak/Dagger, Lonewolves. Basically a whos who of modern Brit and American screamo/hardcore.
Theres a few rants and Jacks points of view, observations on life. Its bits like this that really interest me with zines. Real opinions written by real people on whatever they feel like with no censor but themselves.
Plus there are interviews with Ian Mckaye and Henry Rollins himself in these tomes. Fucking A.

Shebang

This is kinda Riot Grrl zine. And tho a lil old now well worth a read. Alot of music in this too, but with a wider scope than the two above. Interviews with Vivian Girls, Cribs, Swallows, Scoobius Pip, Tegan and Sara, PENS and Jeffery Lewis. Theres some nice personal pieces, art,record reviews (nice to see Wetdog's awesome enterprise reversal here) and an interesting overview of hippy hellhole/liberal paradise (depending on who you talk to) Portland USA. Nice to see the grrls are still doing their thang.

Clipper Guts,

This one is more on a personal level. With writer Joe90 (great name) sharing his views on life (travelling the bus, trends, being chased by chavs) as well as music, and zine reviews. Great bits on Billy childish and brit punk/post punk/garage. A cd comp soon come from Joe too. Now a folded A4 zine, but free for an SAE. Good stuff.

Niche Homo

Been really digging this zine. Written by members of the awesome Broken Arm and Blood Crips. This zine is firing on all cylinders and kicking out the jams.
Great bits of art, humourous stories (how to take a crap at work, a diary of visits to the local public swimming pool, the women of Hollyoaks). A very twisted comic strip about a talking penis who appears thru a gloryhole in dudes bedroom. A mixtape war. Yeh this is pure class.
What really makes this zine though is the pure quality of the interviews with different bands. lengthy and insightful and always interesting to read. Big interviews with Eugene Robinson of Oxbow (ex Whipping Boy), Fucked Up, Mark E fucking Smith (The Fall), Hipshakes, the arty farty Mazes, So Cow, Astral Social Club, Bilge pump, Vivian Girls, Pink Reason and a bunch more in the first 3 issues. You can't fault these guys musical taste at all. The humour is a total blast too, but never interferes with the validity of the interviews or insights into our crazy world. Fucking essential.

I know these have guys have been blogged before but we have really been digging Wild Safari around these parts lately. Their analogue bubblebath percolating with some righteous dubwise sensaibilites certainly hits a chord with us, channeling the spirit of Keith Hudson, Lee Perry, King Tubby and Mickey dread thru the filter of the early warp catalogue on 33. Made up from the guys behind Bathetic Records who have some awesome tape releases on the horizon. One of whom is Pink Priest who's noise and electronic explorations have been pricking our ears for awhile now. You need to check what these guys are up to.

Warm Hands hipped us to the dark sounds of Bad Life. Their songs were the perfect soundtrack to my flu delirium the last few days. They still sound great now though with a clear head. So great we're gonna release a Warm Hands/Bad Life split in the near future. Bad Life also has a split in the works with Mold, and a cdep with PTMIIC aswell as the split with us. Can't remember what release this is gonna be on so maybe you should get em all.

I got the Forest Swords tape 'Miarches' on the great Left Nautical Antiques label a couple of weeks ago (available here). Its still getting alot of plays around here. Forest swords has made some amazing videos to go with Miarches, and 'Glory Gongs' which will be available as a tape thru Woven Tones and a 12" from Olde English spelling Bee. Got a nice package of tapes from Portland USA improv noise band ASSS. That and the Shitty Limits 45rpm LP are keeping me in a good mood. You can download a bunch of great stuff from the Shitty Limits themselves here. But go and get the vinyls too huh.
